History – About ABlE

Attachment

ABLE, the Association of Black Educators, is an organization of Black female educators and other professionals who share a concern for the total environment of the child and the community.  The association was founded over three decades ago by a few graduates from Wayne State University’s School of Education who saw a need for taking their expertise outside the classroom and into the community.  In later years, ABLE extended its membership to include other professionals who, like teachers, would aid the community through their willingness to share their skills.  We are ready. We are willing. We are ABLE.

WHAT WE DO………

Working with other church and community groups, ABLE has organized and offered free workshops which have helped parents assist their children by keeping them up to date on the newest learning techniques as well as introducing them to new methods of teaching, including advanced reading development, new math and computer awareness.

In addition to workshops, ABLE offered tutoring, consultant banks, counseling, volunteer services and aid to needy members of the community.  However, ABLE’s primary contribution to the child and community is the ABLE Scholarship that is awarded annually to graduating seniors who show a need.  The scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement, community involvement and financial need.

HOW WE OBTAIN FUNDS…..

Funding for ABLE consists of membership dues, personal donations and fundraisers.  Some of the many fundraising events have included trips, concerts, birthday tea, skating, bowling, and theatre parties.  Even in its fundraising efforts, ABLE attempts to plan events that serve to raise the awareness of the community as well as the necessary funds in order to reach goals.

WHERE WE WOULD LIKE TO GO FROM HERE…….

ABLE is expanding.  In addition to its expanded membership and ideas, ABLE would like to offer even more community involvement and more scholarships to the hundreds of needy students who are turned down each year.  For this reason, ABLE has extended its fundraising efforts to include donations from individuals and businesses who like to contribute to this worthwhile cause.

Our ability to help deserving students and others has been made possible through the support of friends and associates like you.  Thank you, Thank you!!!
